Introduction to the Nigeria Visa on Arrival Program

Getting a Nigeria visa has been made a lot easier today. You can now get your Nigeria visa within 24 hours now. The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has a visa program which is known as the Nigeria visa on arrival program. The Nigeria visa on arrival program was designed by the Nigeria Immigration service to help foreigners/visa applicants who do not have the Nigeria mission /embassy in their countries or for situations where the Nigeria embassy is very far away from the visa applicants to be able to apply for the Nigeria visa online and have the visa issued to you at the port of entry in Nigeria. Let me explain with this example; In India, the Nigerian embassy is in New Delhi. Let’s say that you are an Indian who stays in Chittorgarh and needs to get a visa to travel to Nigeria. You do not need to make the 10 hour trip to the Nigerian embassy in New Delhi to submit your documents or for your visa interview. All you will need to do is to use the visa on arrival program option to get your visa on arrival approval letter from the Nigeria Immigration Service and have your visa stamped on your passport when you arrive Nigeria at the airport. It’s as easy as that!

Who needs the Nigeria visa on arrival?

Now that we have discussed what the visa on arrival program is about, let us talk about who can take advantage of this visa process.

You can use the Nigeria visa on arrival program if you are coming to Nigeria for the following reasons:

  • Business meeting
  • Conference
  • Workshop
  • Seminar
  • Market Survey
  • Business Investing
  • Equipment installation,etc

In other words, you can use the visa on arrival program to get your entry visa to Nigeria if;

  1. You are coming to Nigeria because you want to meet with your potential business partners to discuss new trends and opportunities pertaining to particular industry, sector or business in Nigeria.

Even if you are just visiting to see what business prospects within the Nigeria economy you can get involved in, you are allowed to use the Nigeria visa on arrival program.

So how does the Nigeria Visa on Arrival Program Work?

Like I mentioned earlier, the Nigeria visa on arrival program enables a visa applicant to gain entry into Nigeria before your passport is stamped with the entry Nigerian visa. Now, this is not to say that you should pack your bags, buy an air ticket and fly to Nigeria. No. If you do that, you will be turned back to your country at the airport of your entry in Nigeria. The visa on arrival program has series of requirements and process that you must go through before you will be allowed to enter Nigeria and have your passport stamped in Nigeria upon entry. For you to understand this better am going to break down the visa on arrival program in two stages:

Stage 1

Getting the Visa on Arrival Approval Letter from the Nigeria Immigration Service.

Stage 2

Arriving at the Port of entry in Nigeria and getting the Nigeria visa stamp by the Nigeria Immigration Service.

Note: Without going through the stage 1, you cannot do the stage 2. In other words, if you do not have the Nigeria visa on arrival approval letter that has been issued to you by the Nigeria Immigration Service, you cannot travel to Nigeria and expect to have your passport stamped with an entry visa. You must first get the visa approval letter before you can make your trip to Nigeria.

How to Get the Visa on Arrival Approval Letter (Stage 1)

To apply for the Nigeria visa on arrival approval letter you will have to the Nigeria Immigration Service official website and fill out the Nigeria visa on arrival application form. However, before you can fill out the visa form you should have some documents and information in place. And we are going to take the requirements and documents one after the other here.

How to Pay Nigeria Visa Fees

After you have finished filling out and submitting this online form, you will be requested by the NIS to make payment for your visa fees.

When it comes to paying the visa fees, I want you to take note of the country citizen you are because that will directly affect the amount of money you will pay as visa fees. For example, if you are an American, your visa fee is $160, Indians pay $253, UK citizen pay $144, $58 for South Africans, etc. To get the full list of visa fees for each country, click here.

Now there is a $20 transaction charges that comes with using the online Nigeria visa on arrival platform so instead of paying only the visa fees, you will be paying the “visa fee” + “”transaction charges”. So for an American visa applicant, you will pay $160 + $20 = $180, for an Indian it is $273 (i.e. $253 + $20), an UK citizen its $164 and so forth. I hope you fully understand. Payments can only be made with reliable MasterCard and VISA cards on the platform.

Once you have made this payment, the following process will take place:

  • The Nigeria Immigration Service begins to vet your visa application.
  • A receipt and an acknowledgement slip will be sent to you.
  • Once the NIS has finished vetting your visa application and a decision has been made, you will receive the visa on arrival approval letter in your email or a rejection notification will be sent to you.
  • Your visa on arrival approval letter is usually issued by the Nigeria Immigration Service within 14 days of your arrival in Nigeria. Let me give you an example so that you can understand it better. Let us that you filled out, submitted and made payment for your visa application on the 19th of August 2019 and your  expected date of arrival in Nigeria is the 20th of September 2019, the Nigeria Immigration Service will send your visa on arrival approval letter to your email from the 7th of September 2019. You will find out that from the 7th of September 2019 to the 20th of September 2019 is 14 days. It is like this because the visa on arrival approval letter expires after 14 days of issuance.
