The Schengen area is made of 26 countries and about 400 million nationals that form an integral part of Europe. Surrounded by about 42,673 kilometers of sea borders and land borders of about 7,721 km, the area boasts of free movement within its borders and promises any migrant an experience of a lifetime.

People migrate to different countries within the Schengen area for a variety of reasons. For tourists, the European countries parade wonderfully unique and fascinating ethnology, beautiful and rich history as well as customs that will catch the interest of visitors. There is also the existence of natural and man-made beauty ranging from cities with decorated with hills such as Tuscany and Rome to those with beautiful and iconic structures like the Eiffel Tower in France and the beautiful cathedrals in Spain. The multicultural population and the warm embracing people all attract people from over the world. For business minded people however, the boosting economy of the area comes in very attractive.

Although there is free movement within the Schengen region, for nationals of a non member country such as Nigerians or a person without a passport of any of the Schengen countries, a visa is usually required to enter into any of the countries in the Schengen area.

Schengen Visa Application Fees

Applying for a Schengen visa in Nigeria is not an especially hard task. Apart from the couple of forms you have to fill, an important aspect you must take care of is the payment of all necessary fees. The visa fees are charged at different prices based on the type of visa for which you are applying and it includes a service fee which must be paid at the corresponding embassy, consulate or application center at the time of form submission.  In a situation where a person’s visa application is denied, the Schengen visa application fees as with many others are non refundable. Generally, the Schengen visa fees vary depending on the age of the applicant and the type of visa that is being applied for as well as some other exceptions that may apply.

In this article, I am going to make a list of Schengen visa application types available to Nigerians and discuss all accompanying visa processing fees attached to each. Please note that the equivalent visa fee in Naira is subject to change depending on currency exchange rate.

  1. SHORT TERM VISA FEES
  2. The first category of short term visa I will discuss includes visa application for applicants who intend to travel for business, tourism, visitor’s visa, sport competition, health or medical treatment purpose, religious purposes. The short term visa allows a ninety day(90) stay in the Schengen area. The cost of the this application is the same regardless of the purpose of obtaining it.

Visa Application fees: for short term visa is currently fixed at 60 Euros or N26,200 ( note that exchange rate is subject to changes)

  1. The second category includes short term visa for children between 6 and 12 years of age travelling for tourism.

Visa Application fees: is currently fixed for this category at 35 Euros or N14,700 .

  1. AIRPORT TRANSIT VISA

This is also referred to as the “A” category visa and allows the holder  to travel through the international zones of Schengen country airport but not into the Schengen Country Area.  It is a compulsory type of visa for individuals who wish to travel from a country outside the Schengen area to another by the way of changing flights in a Schengen country airport.

Visa Application fees: is currently fixed at 60 Euros or N26,200 (note that exchange rate is subject to changes)

  1. LONG STAY SCHENGEN VISA

Usually most Schengen Visas are short stay with maximum of ninety days(90) days . However, a person can obtain a long term visa that will allow more than ninety days stay within the Schengen area through some paper work and by adding extra funds.

Visa application fees: for long term visa is 99 Euros or N41,580 ( note that exchange rate is subject to changes)

Exemptions to Schengen Visa application fees

There are some categories of people that are exempted from paying the schengen visa application fees. They include the following;

  1. Members or representatives of nonprofit organizations that are not more than 25 years of age travelling to attend seminars, sports activities, educational programs, conferences or cultural activities organised by non-profit organizations.
  2. Students (graduates or postgraduates) and pupils travelling alongside their tutors for educational purposes such as studying or training.
  3. Third world country researchers engaged in scientific research.

Note: It is important to note that the above mentioned categories will be required to obtain  a confirmation from the appropriate embassy or consulate before submitting their visa application.

  1. Dependent and Spouses of European Union Nationals are also exempted from the Schengen visa application fees.
  2. Children between the age of 0 and 6 years.

Other Costs Related to Obtaining a Schengen visa

Apart from the regular visa fees, there are also other fees and charges to be taken care of to successfully obtain a Schengen visa. These include:

  1. Service Fee : the cost of service charge for a Schengen visa varies depending on the Schengen country you are applying to.  Ensure you inquire as to the service charge by visiting the website of your desired country’s embassy before you proceed.
  2. Insurance costs : any individual travelling to a Schengen country is required to obtain a travel and health insurance to cover for medical care while in the Schengen area. This is usually expected to cover for up to 30,000 Euros worth of medical expenses.

Important tips to note before you pay your Schengen visa application fees

  1. It is important to note that all payments for the Schengen visa in Nigeria should be made at the time you are submitting your documents to the embassy, consulate or the application centre.
  2. All your applications must the submitted with details of payment. Without the details of payment attached, your application will most likely be rejected and returned to you.
  3. For every payment you make concerning Schengen visa application, there is usually a receipt issued as an evidence of payment. Always make a copy of your payment receipt and keep for reference.
  4. Note that once your application processing has started, you will not get any refund even if your application is not approved.
  5. In a rare case where your visa application fee was paid and cancelled within the same day, you would most likely get a refund. However, such fees cannot be transferred.
  6. Ensure you always have a photocopy of the first page of your passport available as it will be required to pay your visa fees and service charge.
  7. Although you may be informed at the embassy that your visa processing will take between 15- 60 calendar days, you should bear in mind that due to some factors such as request for additional documents or investigation , your visa processing might be longer.
  8. Payments are usually made in cash with denominations of not less than N500.
