Best Places to Visit in Kenya

There exists a huge diversity of places to visit and things to do in Kenya. There are nature and wildlife conservations like the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust where you can find an orphanage with many rhinos and what more; you can adopt an elephant at a very cheap rate.

There are beautiful water bodies like the Lake Nakuru and Lake Naivasha with the incredible sight of a flamboyance of flamingos, The Fourteen falls with an astonishing 27 meter deep view, bird watching, boating activities and beautiful memories to keep. Not to forget the possibility of coming in close contact with huge animals like the elephant in Amboseli and gnus in Maasai Mara. There are also  world heritage Historic sites, museums and world famous safari parks like the Old Town occupied by a mix of local Asians, British, Arab and Portuguese settlers, the Nairobi Gallery and Kitale Museum rich in the history and culture of Kenya and Africa, and then the Bomas of Kenya.

As it is hardly possible to tour a whole of a country in only a few weeks or month especially if you are a first time visitor, I will be sharing in this article the few places that no one should miss out on while on a visit to Kenya. Either you are on a business meeting and have only a couple of days to spare on your schedule or you are solely visiting as a tourist, below is a list of places you wouldn’t want to miss while in the ‘safari” country , Kenya!

  1. The Maasai Mara National Reserve

Often referred to as the best tourist attraction in Kenya, The Maasai Mara is one of the most incredible places to visit while in Kenya. I recommend you save it for your last few days in Kenya (save the best for the last). Located on the border of Tanzania, north of Serengeti and forming a beautiful wildlife corridor between Kenya and Tanzania, the Maasai Mara is where you can see an exceptionally large population of animals and even come in close contact with many. The best time to visit the Maasai Mara is around June to October when the Great Migration occurs with about two million zebras, Thomson’s gazelle and wildebeest travelling to and from Serengeti. The best views are assured from a hot air balloon.

I suggest you camp around in one of the splendid campsites available within the area and spend some time with the famous Maasai tribe, a wonderfully warm and fascinating set of people. The red cloaked people of Maasai can take you a few warrior lessons as well!

  1. The Mount Kenya

Mount Kenya is the second most breathtaking picturesque nature area you need to visit in Kenya. It is no doubt one of the most popular mountains in the world. About 5,200 meters above sea level, it is the highest in Kenya and second highest in Africa.

The Mount Kenya National Park is a well recognised UNESCO World Heritage Site formed by a series of volcanic eruptions and is made of several peaks topped beautifully with snow.  For visitors willing to climb or hike along the mountain, the lowest and the easiest peak to climb is the Lenana while the highest is called Batian. Mount Kenya has variety of fauna and flora to take your breath away including pockets of bamboo, alpine forest, black and white monkeys, leopard, tee hyrax and of course elephants, there are also beautiful sceneries made of glaciers, lakes and mineral springs.

  1. The Lake Nakuru National Park

This is a most intriguing place you do not want to miss in Kenya. Lake Nakuru covering about one third of the Lake Nakuru National park is located in central Kenya provides you with the highest number of pink flamingos you will ever see at one place in the world right atop the lake, floating beautifully and forming an amazing picturesque view from every angle.

The National Park also houses several other species of birds as well as rare wildlife like the black and white rhinos, lions, giraffes, buffalos, warthogs and even pythons. There is a wide range of landscape forming exciting scenic views featuring vast grass and woodlands and amazing views of rocky cliffs bordering the lake itself. A visit to the Lake Nakuru national Park will definitely leave you with pleasant memories.

  1. Lamu Island

Lamu Island is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Kenya located in between surrounding villages northeast of Mombassa. It exudes a calm and charming atmosphere with its rich culture and irresistibly amazing beaches, Lamu Island provides naturally amazing views and breathtaking sceneries. There is a captivating blend of high and low grounds in the Lamu Old Town which is regarded as one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. You will find buildings that reflect a long old history and culture from labyrinth streets to coral stone houses, rooftop patios and hidden courtyards.  Along the streets, you can find donkeys which are still very widely used and inhabitants dressed in local traditional attires signifying a well preserved culture and tradition. You should not forget to visit the Lamu Museum located on the Island with several pieces denoting the Swahili culture and the Lamu Old Town History. There is also the Lamu Fort and the Donkey Sanctuary. You will always have a lot to take in at the Lamu Island and a lot to take home as well in form of beautiful memories.

  1. The Fourteen Falls

How does one even visit Kenya without making a stop at the amazing Kenyan waterfalls called Fourteen Falls?!

The fourteen distinct waterfalls at the Fourteen Falls are located at the famous Athi River very close to Thika town, with abundant plant and bird species to sight and picture. At the fourteen falls, you can also do boating and even go fishing.  The fourteen Falls do not open to visitors all day so ensure you are there between 8.00am and 5.00 pm.

  1. The Great Rift Valley and Lake Naivasha

One of the most touristed places in Kenya, The 9,600 km Great Rift Valley is so much beauty to behold. The valley plays host to several lakes, the large, the deep and the extremely old and over 400 species of birds. There is also a number of volcanic mountains and a range of wildlife. You can enjoy viewing some hot springs, steam vents and have and exotic dish at the floating restaurant in Baringo.

Then there is the lake Naivasha lying peacefully at the peak point of the valley with amazing plant species and wildlife that can be explored while boating. There are the African fish eagles, colobus monkeys, zebras and giraffes for your viewing pleasure and beautiful pictures.

  1. Amboseli National Park

Amboseli National Park is one interesting place in Kenya where you can settle and enjoy an amazing view of the Mount Kilimanjaro and other surrounding scenery. Forming the setting of Kenya’s classic postcard, the view from Amboseli National Park includes a large number of elephants strolling across the plains surrounding the mountain.  There is the wildlife including hippos, rhinos and several species of birds in the swamplands. The best time to visit the Amboseli National park is between 10 am to 4 pm when the animals are all out in the open and carrying about their day to day activities. The Amboseli national park offers a n umber of safaris, camping grounds and hotels to make your trip enjoyable.

  1. Hell’s Gate National Park

Hell’s Gate is quite a scary name but such an amazing place to visit. The Hell’s Gate National Park is located in the North Western part of Kenya’s capital and is a must visit especially for those who love climbing and hiking. Explore the Hell’s Gate beautiful attractions like the Hell’s Gate Gorge, The Mervym Carnelley Raptor Ride, the Obsidian caves, the Fishers Tower, Olkaria geothermal Station and Hot springs and natural geysers.

  1. Diani Beach

Kenya is not only known for wildlife and nature but also fascinating beaches and coastlines. The Diani beach located on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya is one of these. Probably the most beautiful beach in the whole of the country and maybe even the world, the Diani Beach stretches about ten kilometers, is lined with palm fringes and has beautiful reefs creating a most calm and scenic atmosphere. If you are looking to taking some time out to do a little soul searching, meditate or maybe just get some rest from the hustle and bustle of the world, you should visit the Diani Beach.

  1. The Aberdares

Located at the north of Nairobi, the Aberdares’ create a beauty that forms one of the most inspiring views of Kenya.  With mountain ranges stretching about a hundred and sixty kilometers, abundant wildlife, waterfalls, high moorlands, ravines, streams and volcanic outcrops,  the Aberdares forms an enchanting and pretty view only comparable to the biblical garden of Eden.  Aberdares also houses the second largest population of the black rhinos and other animals like the elephants, lions, bongo antelope, baboons, leopards and several species of birds.
